How to Measure Penis Length and Girth Consistently

A practical measurement method that reduces common errors and makes comparisons more meaningful.

Quick answer

Use the same method, conditions and measuring points each time. A single measurement is not a health assessment or a measure of sexual ability.

Before measuring

Measure only when fully erect, in a private and comfortable setting. Temperature, arousal and anxiety can change results. Avoid repeated measuring during the same session.

Length

Use a rigid ruler along the top side. For bone-pressed erect length, gently press to the pubic bone through the fat pad and measure to the tip of the glans. Record whether the measurement is bone-pressed or non-bone-pressed because they are not interchangeable.

Girth

Use a flexible tape around the thickest part of the shaft without compressing the tissue. If no flexible tape is available, use a non-stretch string and measure the string against a ruler.

Common mistakes

Measuring from the underside, following a curve with a flexible tape, pulling the penis, measuring partial erection, rounding aggressively and comparing different methods can all distort results.

What the number is useful for

Measurement is most useful for choosing condom width, discussing a specific fit issue with a clinician, or tracking a genuine anatomical change—not for ranking yourself.

Common questions

Should I measure more than once?

Two or three measurements on different days can give a more stable estimate.

Does body weight affect visible length?

The pubic fat pad can affect non-bone-pressed visible length, which is why measurement methods should be labelled clearly.
