Penile Curvature: Normal Variation and Warning Signs
How to distinguish longstanding mild curvature from a new or painful change that deserves evaluation.
Some curvature can be a normal anatomical variation. New, worsening or painful curvature—especially with a firm area or erectile difficulty—should be assessed.
Longstanding curvature
A stable curve present since adolescence may be congenital and may not require treatment if it causes no pain or functional problem.
New curvature
A change developing over time can have several causes, including scar tissue. Do not diagnose it from photos or internet comparisons.
When it matters
Seek care when curvature causes pain, prevents comfortable sex, worsens, shortens the penis noticeably or is associated with a lump or erectile change.
Avoid unproven devices
Do not use traction, weights or injections without qualified medical guidance.
