Finding Trousers and Jeans That Fit Comfortably
How rise, fabric and front construction affect comfort and appearance.
A larger waist is not always the answer. Higher rise, stretch, front depth and a less restrictive fly can improve fit without making the entire garment oversized.
Rise
Low-rise trousers can reduce available front room and create pressure when sitting.
Stretch
A small amount of stretch can improve movement, but fabric that is too thin may cling.
Cut
Athletic and relaxed cuts can provide more room through the seat and thigh, indirectly improving front comfort.
Alterations
A skilled tailor can sometimes improve waist and seat fit, but cannot easily create front rise where the pattern lacks it.
Try seated
Always assess trousers while sitting, driving and climbing stairs—not only standing in a fitting room.
