Reducing Condom Breakage and Slippage
A practical checklist covering storage, fit, lubrication and application.
Most preventable failures relate to fit, damage, expiry, application, lubricant incompatibility or withdrawal technique.
Before use
Check the expiry date and package. Store away from prolonged heat, sunlight and sharp objects.
During application
Open carefully, confirm orientation, pinch the tip and roll fully to the base. Never reuse a condom or wear two at once.
Lubrication
Adequate compatible lubricant can reduce friction. Avoid oil with latex unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
Withdrawal
After ejaculation, hold the base while withdrawing before the erection is lost.
When failure happens
Stop, replace the condom and seek prompt advice about emergency contraception, STI testing or post-exposure options when relevant.
